Extending awkwardly from Sidnaw/Kenton to half-way up the Keweenaw Peninsula, squeezed thin between Baraga and Ontonagon Counties, Houghton County holds a wide variety of landscapes and river systems. The Keweenaw Ridge runs through the upper reaches, with the Portage Channel cutting to the county in two, leaving the southern stretch with wild rolling hills and thick forests. One of the largest rivers in the area, the Sturgeon River, cuts a massive valley in the Ottawa National Forest.
